I visited with District 5’s city councilwoman, Marcia Johnson, to learn more about her and the issues concerning District 5, which includes the Mayfair Neighborhood.
Marcia has been District 5’s council representative for six years and is very grateful for her constituents and the support she receives from everyone in her district.
Over the years, Marcia has been involved in a variety of zoning/public works projects.
The revision of the outdated zoning code has been one of Denver city council’s biggest challenges over the past few years.
The new zoning updates are meant to preserve current neighborhood feel but also allow new residential and commercial projects to understand where, how and what is allowed to be constructed in various parts of Denver. This project is now in its final stages.
The code changes have caused many citizens to get involved with the process and learn more about how Denver zoning can impact their neighborhood.
When asked what one project during her tenure makes her the most proud, she cited the installation of Delgany Community Garden as one that she remembers fondly.
Her office worked with the non-profit Denver Urban Gardens group to allocate land and space for a community garden that helped new immigrant residents assimilate to the Aurora neighborhood on the eastern boundary of District 5 .
Marcia encourages all District 5 residents to attend a city council meeting to learn more about their community and proposals for their neighborhoods. If you can’t attend in person you can watch the meetings televised live on Channel 8 on Monday nights.
Marcia’s office is a great place to report neighborhood concerns such as graffitti, barking dogs, overgrown weeds and unsightly properties as Marcia and her staff can direct you to the right people to help mitigate the situation.
